Flagship Founders announce spin-off of new startup Arinto, an arrival optimisation system for shipping industry

Berlin-based Flagship Founders, a venture studio that invests in maritime technology, logistics, and shipping firms, announced on Thursday, May 1, the spin-off of another startup, Arinto, a startup with a sustainability focus within the shipping industry.

Arinto will enable shipping firms and ship managers to determine the optimal time for ships to arrive, improving the efficiency of trips. As a result, fuel use and emissions will be reduced and shipping will become more sustainable.

Fabian Feldhaus, co-founder and MD of Flagship Founders, says, “Our claim is to only develop business models that solve pressing problems in the market. Our other startups Kaiko Systems, Tilla Technologies and zero44 have shown that we live up to this.”

“Our pre-foundation validation phase clearly showed the great potential in the market for Arinto. With Isabel Sum, we have also found the perfect founder and managing director. I am sure Arinto will quickly prove its relevance and value to the industry.”

What is Arinto looking to solve?

According to a statement from Flagship Founders, three per cent of the world’s CO2 emissions are attributable to global shipping. This is influenced by many different things. The fact that ship arrival times at ports are not well scheduled is one of the largest and yet most unnecessary inefficiencies.

The ‘hurry-and-wait principle’ states that 5 to 10 per cent of a ship’s active time is typically spent waiting before ports with the ship frequently having travelled there quickly. The effect of this is unnecessarily high fuel usage.

If ship speeds were planned so that they could enter ports on time and without having to wait, 100 million tonnes of CO2 and $18B could be saved annually – equivalent to the average CO2 emissions of 22 million petrol-powered cars or 15 per cent of Germany’s total CO2 emissions in 2022.

This is where Arinto wants to make a difference.

Co-founded by Isabel Sum, Arinto is now creating a software that will enable ‘Just-In-Time Arrival’, or the accurate arrival of ships at the port using real-time data analysis and machine learning technology.

The solution uses ML to assess important data points from multiple commercial data sources as well as data from “Automatic Identification Systems” (AIS).

It gives critical information, such as port congestion, shipping traffic in front of it, and current waiting periods, and makes suggestions on the ideal arrival time at the port. Users of the solution are notified as soon as the system makes an optimisation choice.

The software optimises the arrival time of the ship rather than the route itself, distinguishing itself from other trip optimisation systems.

Sum says, “The potential market for Arinto is large, and almost untapped at that. Emissions reduction is the number one issue in shipping. The pressure from politics and legislation is extremely high. In the long term, no company will be able to afford the kind of inefficiencies we see everywhere now.”

“This in-turn leads to a strong increase in demand pressure from the shipping companies. Everyone is looking for solutions and we offer them.”

Currently, Arinto is in the product development phase. The staff will be built up over the following three months, and Isabel Sum and her firm will also focus on conversations with possible partners and clients. The software will be launched to the general public later this year.
